Portola High School opened its doors in August of 2016. Our 42-acre campus sits in Irvine, CA adjacent to the Great Park on what was formerly known as the El Toro Marine Base.


From day one, Portola High School has been offering the same opportunities to our learners as they would experience at any other high school within the Irvine Unified School District. These opportunities include a rigorous and relevant curriculum, a visual and performing arts program, a comprehensive athletics program, and a robust activities program.


Our learners in grades 9 and 10 are enrolled in the following six courses: Literature & Language Arts, Integrated Math and Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education, and either a World Language , Visual and Performing Arts, or another elective course. The majority of classes are offered at the College Preparatory level and A-G approved.


Portola High School boasts a wifi system capable of up to five devices per person at full capacity. As the first true 1:1 high school in Irvine, all students check out a Chromebook for the year and use it throughout the day in several classes as well as at home. As we move closer to a paperless system, our students and teachers will use the latest software to both manage and facilitate learning.


Portola High School’s vision is that it be a place where every learner belongs, contributes and thrives. We purposefully use the word learner to include not only students but adults as well. In this rapidly changing world we all need to be continually growing, taking risks and attempting new things. From the vision, came our mission and our Bulldog PRIDE (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Drive, Empathy) motto which describes the characteristics we want each of our students to demonstrate on a daily basis.


The Portola High School Bell Schedule is unique in that it is a mixture of an 8 period alternating block schedule with one day per week in which all periods meet for an abbreviated time. The Portola Leadership team decided that it was in the learners’ best interest that teachers teach six classes rather than five in an effort to minimize class size. Rather than the typical class size of 38-40, Portola holds classes at around 30-32 students per class.


Within the bell schedule there are built in times for teacher collaboration (professional development and staff meetings included), Office Hours (a time for students to get extra support 2x per week), and Advisement (a time for each teacher to meet with 25 students 2x per week in a nonacademic yet structured setting). The schedule was purposefully designed to give students flexibility and options in selecting their courses as well as fewer classes each school night to focus on for study.
 


2016년 8월에 문을 연 포톨라 하이스쿨은 42에이커에 달하는 캠퍼스를 가지고 있으며 그레이트 파크에 인접한 캘리포니아 주의 얼바인에 위치하고 있습니다.


포톨라는 개교했을 때부터 IUSD학군 내의 다른 고등학교에서 경험할 수 있는 것과 같은 동일한 기회를 학생들에게 제공해오고 있습니다. 엄격하고 관련 있는 커리큘럼, 공연 예술 프로그램, 포괄적인 운동 프로그램 및 탄탄한 액티비티가 이에 포함됩니다.
포톨라의 9학년과 10학년 학생들은 다음의 여섯 개의 과정을 등록할 수 있습니다. Literature & Language Arts, Integrated Math and Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education, and either a World Language , Visual and Performing Arts나 다른 선택 과목입니다. 대부분의 수업은 대학 입학을 준비를 위한 과정이며 A-G승인 과목입니다.


포톨라는 교내에서 일 인당 최대 다섯 대의 기기를 사용할 수 있는 wifi 시스템을 자랑합니다. 학생들은 원하는 경우 매해 크롬북을 신청할 수 있으며, 학교 수업 시간 뿐만 아니라 집에서 사용할 수 있습니다. 이 시스템으로 불필요한 종이 사용을 줄이는 동시에 학생과 선생님 모두 최신 소프트웨어를 이용한 학습 관리를 가능하게 만듭니다.


포톨라의 비전은 학교가 모든 학습자들(Learner)에게 소속감을 주고 그들의 공헌으로 번영하는 공간이 되자는 것입니다. 학습자라 일컫는 이유는 학생뿐만 아니라 성인들도 포함시키기 위함이며, 급변하는 세상에서 위험을 감수하고 새로운 것을 시도하며 끊임없이 성장하자는 뜻입니다. 우리의 미션과 불독 프라이드 (Bulldog PRIDE: 인내, 존경, 진실성, 추진력, 공감능력)는 이러한 비전을 기반으로 탄생했으며, 학생들이 일상생활에서 블독 프라이드를 행하기를 바랍니다.


포톨라의 벨 스케줄은 다소 특별합니다. 월요일을 제외한 요일은 블록 스케줄입니다. 즉, 수요일과 금요일은 짝수 클래스, 화요일과 목요일은 홀수 클래스로 진행됩니다. 포톨라의 리더쉽 팀은 교사들에게 5교시가 아닌 6교시를 가르치도록 했으며, 이를 작은 규모의 학급을 유지하는 최상의 방법이라 여겼습니다. 포톨라는 일반 학급 규모인 38-40명이 아닌 학급당 약 30-32명의 학생으로 수업을 진행합니다.


벨 스케줄에는 교사 협업(전문 개발 및 직원 회의 포함), 오피스 아워(학생들이 주 2회 추가 지원을 받을 수 있는 시간), 어드바이즈먼트(교사 한 명당 25명의 학생이 비학습적인 만남을 갖는 시간, 주 2회)가 포함되어 있습니다. 이러한 스케줄들은  학생들에게 수업 시간을 유연하게 선택할 수 있는 선택권을 주고, 요일마다 받는 수업의 개수를 줄임으로써 학습에 집중할 수 있도록 합니다.
